How we check prices

On a test set of 40 SaaS pricing pages, 94.8% of plans come out exactly right: every price, billing cycle and unit, and nothing extra. Here is how we get there, and where it still goes wrong.

94.8%

plans exactly right (182 of 192)

95.9%

of listed prices found (231 of 241)

97.9%

of prices we report are right (231 of 236)

Add-ons sold or not: 39 of 40 right. We also used these pages to improve the system, so expect somewhat lower accuracy on sites we have not tested.

1. Capture the page as a person sees it

A real browser opens the pricing page, clicks each billing switch, plan tab and plan dropdown, and records the text and a screenshot of every state. If the page publishes structured price data, we keep that too. Archived pages from the Internet Archive go through the same reader, which is how we rebuild two years of history.

2. Read it twice, independently

A language model extracts the plans from the captured text. It runs twice; if the two readings disagree on a plan, a third run decides, and a plan with no majority is held back.

3. Check against the source

A separate verifier from another provider compares the extracted prices with the page text and flags values the page does not support. Rule checks catch impossible results, such as a plan listed twice.

4. Hold, don't guess

Anything that fails a check is held: it stays out of comparisons, alerts and public pages until it is fixed. Every number we show links to the capture it came from, so you can check it yourself.

Where it still goes wrong

  • Pages that only show prices after long interaction, such as calculators and sliders, can be read incompletely.
  • Readings can disagree on a plan. When no majority emerges, that plan is held, so a plan can be missing rather than wrong.
  • Archived captures sometimes miss parts of a page, so old states can be partial. Their change dates are approximate and labeled that way.
  • Some sites show local prices by visitor location. We show the currency the page showed us, and flag it when it is not USD.
